What Are the Biggest Challenges in Travel and Expense Management Today?
Reported by Olli Benett | June 14th, 2026 @ 12:29 PM
One of the biggest challenges in travel and expense management today is the continued reliance on manual processes. Many employees still submit expenses through spreadsheets, email attachments, or paper receipts, which leads to frequent errors, missing information, and slow reimbursement cycles. Finance teams often spend a large amount of time correcting entries instead of focusing on analysis or cost optimization.
Another major issue is policy compliance. Even when companies have clear travel rules in place, they are often difficult to enforce in real time. Employees may accidentally or intentionally exceed limits on hotels, meals, or transportation, and these violations are usually only caught during manual review. This creates friction between employees and finance teams and increases overall costs.
Approval delays also remain a persistent problem. In many organizations, expense claims pass through multiple layers of approval, which slows down processing and frustrates employees who are waiting for reimbursement. Modern travel and expense management systems aim to reduce these bottlenecks, but many businesses still struggle with outdated workflows and disconnected tools.
